Six months after the mid-term review meeting in Berlin, the OppAttune project has been praised by the European Commission’s external reviewers in its interim periodic review. The project, which focuses on enhancing democratic resilience and combating everyday extremism, was praised for “fully achieving its objectives and milestones”. The periodic review was led by Scientific coordinator Professor Kesi Mahendran from The Open University.
In April 2024, representatives from 17 partner institutions across Europe gathered in Berlin for a pivotal meeting to mark the transition into Year 2 of the project. At this meeting, the team shared progress on key milestones and developed strategies to address challenges related to democracy and extremism. Six months later, the European Commission’s review underscores the project’s initial success, particularly highlighting its transdisciplinary approach and focus on public dialogue.
Professor Kesi Mahendran reflected on the positive review, stating: “This recognition from the European Commission’s external reviewers confirms that we are on the right track. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire consortium as we continue to explore pathways for enhancing democratic resilience across Europe.”
With this momentum, the OppAttune project is now entering the Attunement phase, develop innovative tool-kits and frameworks aimed at countering everyday extremism and strengthening democratic capacities across Europe and beyond.
